Naco, Arizona is a small border town with a history and unique characteristics that set it apart from many other towns in the United States. It is located in Cochise County, Arizona, directly across the United States–Mexico border from its sister city of Naco, Sonora. This unique geographical positioning has shaped its history, economy, and culture. The town was established in the early 20th century and was originally settled by the Nahua and Opata Indians, with the name "Naco" meaning "nopal cactus" in the Opata language. The U.S. Congress officially established Naco as a Port of Entry on June 28, 1902, and today, the Naco port of entry operates 24 hours a day. Naco's history is deeply intertwined with the border. Established in the early 20th century, the town was initially a hub for copper mining and ranching. The border itself was a mere formality, with people and goods moving freely between the U.S. and Mexico. This dynamic changed with the onset of Prohibition in the United States, which saw Naco becoming a point of entry for contraband alcohol. One of the most notable historical events in Naco's history is the "Battle of Naco," part of the Mexican Revolution. In 1915, Constitutionalist forces in Mexico, led by General Alvaro Obregon, clashed with the Villistas near the border. This battle was significant for being one of the few instances where a foreign conflict spilled onto U.S. soil, as stray bullets often landed in Naco, Arizona. As of the 2023 census, Naco had a population of about 1,000 people with a racial makeup that was predominantly Hispanic with a median age of 30 years old and a median household income of $37,000. The population is characterized by a significant number of residents of Hispanic descent, with a majority being U.S. citizens. The homeownership rate is quite high at 83%, and most residents drive to work to nearby Bisbee and other Arizona towns. #naco #arizona #bordertown Don't forget to LIKE 👍 this video, SUBSCRIBE ❤️ to my channel so you will not miss other great videos that are coming soon!
