The Icon of Liberalism in Africa, Cellou Dalein Diallo

Cellou Dalein Diallo has been fighting for democracy in his native #Guinea for the last 14 years. Since he became president of the liberal Union of Democratic Forces of Guinea party in 2007, he dedicated his political life to the peaceful struggle against the autocratic rule and the mismanagement that have dominated Guinea for so long. In 2009 he organised the opposition against the military government of Dadis Camara. He was severely injured by security forces leading a peaceful demonstration against the military juntas’s decision to cancel legislative elections. During the rule of president Alpha Condé, he became the loudest voice against the massive corruption and the misuse of power by Condé and his cronies. He fiercely opposed all manoeuvres by Condé to ensure himself a third presidential mandate and thus stay in power indefinitely. Believing in change by democratic means Cellou Dalein Diallo encouraged Guineans to vote instead of referring to violent protest. Again Cellou Dalein Diallo and his party had to pay dearly for their belief in peaceful change. As the ruling autocrat was highly unpopular and risked to lose his grip to power, he referred to massive electoral fraud and violent intimidation to keep his presidential seat. Cellou Dalein Diallo was put under house arrest, many of his followers were jailed and some even killed by armed security forces and political militia. Later Cellou Dalein Diallo was impeded to leave the country, even though he was going on official missions for Liberal International, where he had been elected Vice President in 2017. When the Guinean military once more took to power in the coup d’etat in September 2021, Cellou Dalein Diallo’s struggle for democracy continued under the new rulers. He advocated for a timely re-establishment of a legitimate government as well as fair and free elections. However, up to the present the new Guinean military junta shows no ambition to leave the presidential palace. Restrictions against political parties are enforced and their leaders are continuously harassed. In a recent move, Cellou Dalein Diallo’s private house was dispossessed and subsequently demolished by the junta, falsely claiming that it was government property. Despite all these setbacks, Cellou Dalein Diallo’s struggle to eventually free his country from decades of autocracy and mismanagement continues. For his efforts he receives continuous support from liberals all around the world. Cellou Dalein Diallo is the elected recipient of the 2022 Africa Freedom Prize from the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom in Sub-Saharan Africa.
