Drone footage of military cemeteries on The Somme

This drone footage was taken during a pilgrimage to northern France by six friends who support the World War I Remembrance Centre in Portsmouth UK. Travelling by motorcycle in September 2023, they first explored the Normandy battlefields and then rode on to The Somme area. The trip was organised and planned by Adam Williams, (Ex Army Air Corps), a registered and badged member of the Guild of Battlefield Guides. The party he led comprised Aidrian Furniss, Ex AAC, Russ Harker, ex REME, Charlie Gandar, ex Life Guards, Clive Durrant, ex AAC, Clive's son Danny Boyle (not the famous director but Danny did do the drone shots so a pretty good effort at being one!) Intent on learning more about the heroic deeds of their forefathers and relatives, the friends spent three days visiting places of interest in Normandy, including Cafe Gondree, Pegasus Bridge, Merville Battery, Ranville Cemetery and four of the beaches used in the D-Day landings - Sword, Juno, Gold and Omaha beaches. They then rode from Normandy to a great B&B in La Boisselle overlooking Mash Valley on the Somme, called Number 56. They spent a lovely three days being well looked after by their hosts, Julie and David Thomson (extremely highly recommended in case anyone is visiting the area). The party visited Gommecourt, The Thiepval Memorial, The Ulster Memorial, The Newfoundland Memorial, Lochnagar Crater, and the exact location in Beaumont Hamel from where Geoffrey Mallins took the famous footage of the detonation of the Hawthorne Ridge mine on 1 July 1916 the first day of the Battle of The Somme. They also spent time reflecting at numerous cemeteries reading the names of hundreds of men whose lives were cut short at a horrendous time in history. The drone footage shows Gommecourt No2 Cemetery, and Authille Cemetery on the banks of the River Ancre and also a general overview of the Somme today.
