Evaluating the potential of these compounds require the use of biological markers to select patients likely to respond to treatment, and to monitor their antitumor efficacy. In particular, imaging biomarkers are non-invasive and allow repeated analysis of the spatial and temporal heterogeneity of tumor biological processes. Their translation towards the clinic is quite easy, as imaging scanners used for small animals are very similar to those used in clinical studies. Through a series of examples, Xavier Tizon, Head of Oncodesign's Imaging Lab, explored how pharmaco-imaging - the use of imaging for pharmacological enquiry - can help drug development by earlier, safer decision-making for drug candidates and better translation towards clinical trials.
