A documentary about the sama drinking songs (Chinese: sama jiu ge, 萨玛酒歌) of the Monpa people (Chinese: Menba zu, 门巴族) of Tsona (错那市), Shannan (山南市), southeastern Tibet Autonomous Region, China. Shannan, which is bounded by the city of Lhasa to the north, Nyingchi to the east, Shigatse to the west, and the international border with India and Bhutan to the south, is also called Lhoka (ལྷོ་ཁ) in Tibetan, transliterated as Luoka (洛卡) in Chinese. As of 2020 there were 11,143 Monpa people living in China's Tibet Autonomous Region, with approximately 50,000 more living in Arunachal Pradesh (northeastern India) and Bhutan. They speak a group of dialects in the Tibeto-Burman language family, which are significantly different from the Eastern Tibetan dialect. The master performer featured in this video is Mr. Baima Ciren (白玛次仁), who holds the status of Autonomous Region-Level Inheritor/Transmitter of the Intangible Cultural Heritage item of sama drinking songs. Filmed in the Lebu Valley (Chinese: Lebu Gou, 勒布沟), a scenic area of Tsona (错那市), Shannan (山南市), southeastern Tibet Autonomous Region, China, c. 2018. This video, which was produced by the Xizang TV Station (西藏电视台) and aired on Tibet Satellite TV (西藏卫视), was uploaded on December 25, 2018. "Sama" (萨玛) is the name of a type of folk song, which are generally sung, either in solo or duo form, at festive occasions such as weddings, drinking parties, or farewell celebrations, or while working. The lyrics, which make good use of metaphorical language, generally express beautiful and sincere blessings, praises, and wishes for all living things, as well as features of the natural landscape such as mountains and rivers, reflecting numerous aspects of the life and customs of the Monpa people. Sama drinking songs are divided into two types: those with a single verse and those with multiple verses, with the latter being more common. Most sama songs have six or nine syllables per line, with three or four lines constituting a verse; there are also sama lyrics with seven, eight, or ten syllables per line, and five, six, or eight lines constituting a verse. Sama drinking songs are often performed as part of drinking and singing competitions, in which whoever fails to sing to the end is the loser, and the punishment for the loser is to drink a penalty drink, or the winner is rewarded with wine while the loser must drink water. The tradition of sama drinking songs of the Menba ethnic group (门巴族萨玛酒歌), centering on Tsona (错那市), Shannan (山南市), southeastern Tibet Autonomous Region, was included in the Fourth Batch of the Tibet Autonomous Region Autonomous Region-Level Intangible Cultural Heritage List (西藏自治区第一批自治区级非物质文化遗产名录). Additionally, in 2021 the tradition of sama folk songs of the Menba ethnic group (门巴族萨玛民歌), centering on Shannan (山南市), southeastern Tibet Autonomous Region, was included in the Fifth Batch of China's National-Level List of Representative Items of Intangible Cultural Heritage (第五批国家级非物质文化遗产代表性项目名录) by China's Ministry of Culture (中华人民共和国文化部, known since March 2018 as the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, 中华人民共和国文化和旅游部).
