Visiting the Lascaris War Rooms in Valletta Malta deep under the rocks of the Upper Barrakka Gardens & from where operations during World War II were directed. It's now a museum so join me for a tour! 🇲🇹 See more of my Drive Malta videos here → http://bit.ly/DriveMalta My solo trip to Malta ends underground at the Lascaris War Rooms where I learn about the top secret location in Valletta that was used to organise and prepare military operations in the Mediterranean area during World War II. It’s a true part of Malta’s heritage. Who would think that when you’re standing in the peaceful and serene Upper Barrakka Gardens there would be a secret military compound below the surface, let alone the Lascaris War Rooms. The digging of the tunnels and compartments began during the rule of the Order of St John way back in the 16th century and were extended by the British military during World War II. The British realised how important the islands of Malta would be and set about defending them with all their might - after Italy joined the war bombing raids over Valletta and the rest of Malta intensified as the battle for control of the Mediterranean raged around them. During the Second World War the Lascaris War Rooms were classified top secret and every attempt was made to keep their location hidden. They were operational until 1977 at which point they were decommissioned and later turned into a museum and opened up to the public. Join me as I take a self guided tour around the war rooms and historical tunnels to see what life was like underground when the country was at war. I learned about the telecommunication rooms, how accurate data was identified in the filter room, where military personnel slept during bombing raids, and how all the information was collated in the map room. It’s also possible to visit the place where General Eisenhower from the United States launched Operation Husky - which is the Allied invasion of Sicily during the Summer of 1943. Back above ground I stopped by the Saluting Battery where a canon was fired out towards the Grand Harbour of Valletta, a sound that historically rang out at midday so that Ship Masters could calibrate their chronographs. And with that my incredible week long road trip around Malta was over.
