Using a DBA in Private Practice as a Marketing Strategy | Doing Business As Name FREE Guide: Start a Private Practice in Counseling: https://tinyurl.com/y9ek9en8 Watch my video about SEO:    • How to Rank in Google | Boost your SE...   Watch my video about Keywords:    • Free keyword tool: Find Keywords for ...   So what’s a Doing Business As name and what do you need to think through when choosing one? In this video I share a bit about my own experience using a DBA and go over how having one could benefit you too. This video is geared for therapists of all kinds, including psychologists, MFTs, LPCCs, social workers, and others in the clinical counseling field. Welcome to Private Practice Skills! I’m Dr. Marie Fang, psychologist in private practice. I post videos offering tools I learned the hard way about starting and growing private practice so that you don’t have to. www.privatepracticeskills.com Facebook: www.facebook.com/PrivatePracticeSkills/ Insta: PrivatePracticeSkills Music Credit: "Outside" by Ikson   / ikson   First of all, what is a DBA? It’s short for “doing business as,” and is a secondary name you can select for your business for marketing purposes. So for example, my legal business entity name is “Marie Fang, PSYD,” but I have a DBA of “Life Christian Counseling.” So for any legal matters such as filing taxes, I use Marie Fang PSYD, but for all marketing materials such as my website, I am able to use my DBA of “Life Christian Counseling.” Why choose a different name? Isn’t your name your brand? Though we do want in time to build a sense of local trust in our own name, there are certain advantages of a DBA that are worth considering when setting up your practice. Here are some advantages of a DBA: 1. SEO Advantages. This advantage isn’t often spoken about but has been the biggest advantage of having a DBA in my practice. If you’re feeling totally confused when I refer to SEO, check out my video linked below and up here. I cover all the SEO basics to catch you up to speed. A strategic DBA name can really boost your practice if you include keywords in your name that potential clients will likely be searching for when looking for a therapist. Because let’s face it, unless I become Uber-famous someday, nobody is going to be typing “Marie Fang” into a Google search looking for a therapist. But they might type something like “Christian Counselor” if that’s something they’re looking for. So my DBA name “Life Christian Counseling” nails my biggest target keyword while also making a clear statement about what to expect from me before ever clicking onto my website. Check out my video all about how to use keywords properly. When you select a DBA as part of your SEO strategy, it’s important to know where to place this name throughout your website to help Google know to send the right potential clients to your website. 2. Build a Brand Somehow, having a practice name other than my personal name comes across as more official. Right now my practice is a solo practice, but potential clients see my name and assume I’m part of a larger professional group. This helps build trust in the practice as a whole before a client has ever met you. 3. Easier to start a Group Practice Building on the previous point, if you think you might ever expand your practice by adding more practitioners to it in the future, a DBA can be a wise choice to make the transition from solo to group much easier. If my practice was always called “Dr. Marie Fang” and I suddenly switched to “Life Christian Counseling,” that name would be totally new to my community. It would take some time to build trust in that new brand name. Check with your state a and city about the process for selecting a DBA name. In my state of California, my business entity name has to be my first and last name, but I can request to have a different DBA for marketing purposes. Be sure to check with your state and city laws to find out how the process works in your region. Of course, you can always create a DBA name at any point - it doesn’t have to happen when you first set up your business. So feel free to take your time thinking it through. And if you don’t go with a DBA, there are many other opportunities for building your brand and your SEO. I’m curious: do you use a DBA in your practice? Leave a comment below! And until next time, from one therapist to another: I wish you well!
