Mystical Poetry of Rumi - "The wine of divine love"

Notes: (1) Mansur Hallaj, also known as “the martyr of divine love”, was a10th century Sufi mystic, writer, poet and spiritual teacher.born in 858 in the Fars province of Iran. He was executed brutally for proclaiming his mystical experiences. Hallaj has been an icon for all other mystics after him including the great poets like Hafez, Attar, and Rumi. In the first line of this couplet Rumi states that he is feeling the presence of Hallaj near him, and in the second line he is desiring “the wine of divine love” (2) In a previous video a description of Tanbur was provided; Tanbur is an ancient Iranian/Kurdish musical instrument; it is a long-necked stringed instrument. In this couplet, Rumi states that he will ask the planet Venus for the sound of Tanbur. It is worth mentioning that according to ancient mythology Venus is the musician planet in the solar system as Mercury plays the role of the messenger. (3) In this couplet the poet desires to be beside the wine bearer so that by drinking wine to distance him from himself, the mind, the ego, or from the socially fabricated “I’ ; all of which are an obstacle between his true essence and the beloved.
