The aptly named red throated loon calling out on Cat Lake, British Columbia. It was so loud if you were there, but the video may require a little extra volume. There are only five species of loons worldwide, all living in the northern hemisphere. The red throated loon (Gavia stellata) is only vocal on breeding grounds and otherwise remains silent. They spend their summers up in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago and winter on the Great Lakes and both coasts as far as Florida and northern Mexico. The red throated loon is the smallest of the loon species and also the one with the northernmost habitat. Some individuals nest up in northern Greenland.
