What the Carters' Apes**t Really Meant | Beyonce and Jay-Z's Cultural Activism Pt.1

What the Carters' Apes**t Really Meant - In 2018, Jay-Z and Beyonce, also known as the Carters, released a music video for the song Apes**t ahead of the release of their joint album “Everything is Love”. The video was almost entirely shot in Le Louvre, a monumental museum located in Paris, and containing some of the most prestigious works of art in the world. Unsurprisingly, most comments below the video focused on how lavish the whole set seemed and how rich and powerful Beyonce and Jay-Z must be to privatize such a location. But many seemed to have overlooked the visible yet subtle work done to construct the video’s progression around specific works of art. More than a next-level flex, the video is a testament to Beyonce and Jay-Z’s sophisticated cultural activism and depicts the black diaspora in a very original and thoughtful way while raising questions about the art exhibited in the museum.
