How to Catch Coho Salmon Spoon Fishing the Vedder River

How to fish with PRIME LURES spoons on a river to catch Coho Salmon fishing the Vedder River. Spoons catch salmon. Lots of salmon. In the ocean I use spoons while trolling for salmon about 75% of the time. Super effective and dependable. This fact does not change in the rivers, BUT my percent time on a spoon rod is only a fraction. Maybe 5 to 10%... but when I do it is usually a success. Just need to have it along when the right water and condition presents itself. Spoons work really well in the early morning... afternoon and evening. Pretty much any time of day there is a possibility you will connect with a coho on a spoon. I found an 8'6" to 9' rod is really optimal for spoons. I broke my Fenwick Eagle rod unfortunately, but it was great. This time around, I bought the @uglystik Elite Salmon/Steelhead 8'6" medium heavy rod. These Ugly Stik's seem to stand up to my level of abuse better. So far it feels great and easy to control fish. I like a longer rod because you can really send that spoon a mile on the cast and you can keep the line up high if you want so the spoon doesn't sink much in shallow tail outs. Also the longer rod gets you a better hookset and easier to keep fish pinned in my opinion. Also playing a fish, especially a big one is easier on the longed rod. Reel is a Shimano Ci4+ Stradic. The line is 20lb green PowerPro brain. I used 15lb fluorocarbon leader as a bumper, 3 to 10 feet is a good length. Spoon choice... for the money I think your best bang for buck is the 12gram Prime Lures Oval Spoons. Highly effective and great silver metal finish. High quality Mustad hooks. Find slower speed water usually 20 inches deep to 10 feet deep. Then cast your spoon slightly upstream. Let it sink for a few seconds depending on depth. Sometimes they hit it on the initial fall. Start retrieving slowly so the spoon tap, tap, tap, flicks away at your rod tip. You don't want a fast spinning spoon. You want a side to side flip and and the odd roll mixed in to trigger bites. Sometimes stop and go or flip it and let it flutter. You can also try swinging it across the run if enough current. These are all techniques to get you bites. If I didn't convince you yet... When the numbers coming through aren't very high and the river level is higher... a most excellent choice of presentation is a spoon. I find the Prime Lures Oval Spoon is perfect. Cast and retrieve slowly or swing it. Take your pick of presentation and cover all the water. The strikes from these super chrome fish right out of the ocean is amazing! They just crush the spoons. So if your spoon tap stops and you're left with slack line definitely set the hook because they're carrying the spoon your way. Otherwise it's just a solid strike you can't miss it. Super successful in the right situation, I never leave home without them and catch a lot of coho on spoons. Stock up for next season when you see them back on the shelf. Prime Lures has some new colors coming to satisfy all your wildest dreams and brighten up your dreary bead box. Thanks for watching, if you have any questions place them in the comments below.
