Titipounamu / rifleman are New Zealand's smallest bird, they are only 7-9cm long and weigh around 6 grams (the same as a A4 sheet of paper). They can be found in areas or mature forest and only survive in areas with good predator control. They are from the wren family of birds and are a very ancient species endemic to NZ. I came across a family of rifleman at Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre, in the Wairarapa, I noticed they were darting in and out of a tree hollow, at first I thought it was a nest, but quickly realised there must be a pool of water as they were shaking water drops off their feathers. This was a very special encounter! I highly recommend visiting Pūkaha if you want to see titipounamu, their population is one of the most dense I've come across anywhere in the North Island.
