Diamond DA42 VI Flight from Seattle to Orcas Island – Pre-Departure Briefing plus P3 Orion Fly-By!

Important – This video is for entertainment only. It is not intended for instruction and should not be used for any training purpose. In April, I flew up to the San Juan Islands north of Seattle to meet a friend (who also owns a Twin Diamond) for an early dinner. We met at Orcas Island airport (KORS) and it was a short walk into the town. We had dinner at Mijitas in Eastsound which was my friend’s recommendation. It was great and I’ll definitely be back! I decided to include more of my pre-departure briefing than I typically have in these videos. A thorough pre-departure briefing is important in any plane but it’s particularly critical in a twin engine aircraft. If you lose an engine after takeoff, the DA42 is able to continue to climb on one engine but there are a number of steps the pilot needs to take quickly and correctly. These need to be memory items. Hence the value of a briefing whether you are solo or you have two pilots on board. I verbalize these steps even if I am on my own in the cockpit so I am fresh on what I will need to do if I lose an engine. It's only about a 30 minute flight from KRNT to KORS and the weather was beautiful. As I passed the Whidbey Naval Air Base, I got to share the airspace with a P3 Orion and got a couple of photos as it passed by (~16:00 in the video). I hope you enjoy the video. I’m always happy to hear ways I can improve these videos and make them more useful. A couple of notes on this video and flight: - I had the GoPro in the back of the cockpit looking forward set to a more narrow lens setting. In retrospect, this removed a lot of useful cockpit visuals. I’ll revert to a wider angle on subsequent videos - If you happen to look at online track of this flight (e.g. on FlightRadar24), you may see that I did a practice approach at Paine Field (KPAE). This was done under VMC and was not loggable. I just decided to add it to the flight for some practice. I didn’t think the video was that interesting, so I decided to remove it from this post I hope you enjoy the video.
