Attracting Backyard Birds: Purple Finches

Purple Finches are medium-sized, stocky finches. Males are raspberry red, and females are streaky with bold brown-and-white face patterns. Let’s take a look at the foods and feeders that you can use to attract these streaky songbirds to your backyard buffet. Food Types: Purple Finches prefer thin sunflower seeds, like black-oil sunflower, over wide seeds. These seeds have a thin shell and are easy to crack open. Needle-shaped nyjer seed is the favorite food of small finches like redpolls and goldfinches, and it will also attract Purple Finches. Millet is a great option to attract both Purple and House Finches. It spoils quickly when wet, so make sure to put out only small amounts at a time. Feeder Types: Small tube feeders keep seeds clean and dry. Feeders with smaller perches and feeding ports exclude large birds from taking over. Purple Finches may find it hard to cling to mesh nyjer feeders. Designs that include a seed catch tray and/or perches are best. Hopper feeders will attract most feeder birds, including Purple Finches. Small hoppers prevent large birds from monopolizing food. Landscaping Tips: Purple Finches are attracted to backyards with conifer trees. They also eat seeds from plants like cocklebur and ragweed during winter.
