Two Men Went Up Into the Temple to Pray… (Sermon from Luke 18:9-14)

In this story, Jesus compares the prayers of two Jewish men, a Pharisee and a tax collector. When Jesus’ first century Jewish audience heard, “Pharisee,” they would have pictured a religious man who was passionate about obeying God and keeping God’s commandments. They would have assumed the Pharisee was going to be the good guy in the story. The tax collector, by contrast, would have been an obvious bad guy, a reprobate and a traitor. However, when the parable ended with the tax collector justified and exalted, it would have been a shocking and even scandalous conclusion to the story. In order to discover the discomfort of this story we have to ask, who do we vilify and look down upon in order to feel better about ourselves? PRIMARY TEXT FOR THIS MESSAGE: 9 He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt: 10 “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed[a] thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’ 13 But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” (Luke 18:9-14, ESV) FIND US ON SOCIAL MEDIA: Facebook -   / theccmr   Instagram -   / theccmr
