David Binns, 41, was a long-time customer before buying the Aurora Shoe Company in 2009 from original owner Mary Jane “MJ” Dann. Dann opened the business in 1991 in a small shop in Ithaca. The company grew and moved into a newly built factory on the outskirts of the village of Aurora. After selling the business to Binns, Dann stayed on as an artisan shoemaker and continues to work there to this day. Under the guidance of Binns, the company has continued to grow internationally as well as here in the U.S. The company boasts its hand-crafted footwear made only from locally sourced materials from around the country. Currently, seven artisans shoemakers along with Binns apply their craft producing 10,000 of the comfortable form-fitting leather footwear that totaled just over a million dollars in sales last year.
