TTC BYD K9M 3753 Electric Bus Ride

In 2017, the Toronto Transit Commission issued a Request for Information from battery electric bus manufacturers in order to evaluate the technology as a method of achieving the City of Toronto's commitment to reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions. In April 2018, demo buses from New Flyer, Proterra and BYD were on display at TTC facilities and some public events. Orders were placed in May 2018 and subsequently expanded upon in June 2018, and the delivery of 25 New Flyer Xcelsior XE40 buses, 25 Proterra Catalyst BE40 buses, and 10 BYD K9M buses. 3753 is one of the 10 BYD K9Ms in the 3750-3759 range, based at Eglinton Division since delivery in 2020. The BYDs saw extensive testing throughout 2020 and 2021, with occasional usage in revenue service, but faults saw the entire fleet out of service for much of 2022, only returning to service in mid 2023. At the time of recording in July 2023, the BYD fleet, along with the other electric buses, were being used in service as much as they ever had been.
