Relationship are complicated... My 7 step Let’s Talk process offers every dog a choice in who they allow in their space and who they want to avoid. Facilitating a conversation at a safe distance provides the handlers time to better understand each dog’s preference without the risk of unnecessary stress or physical injury. It can be tricky to socialize a rescue dog when you do not know the dog's background. Many dogs begin to move about when they see another dog. **This activation may appear differently depending on the dogs emotional state. 1. The excited dog is often jumping up high with an elongated body while vocalizing. 2. The playful energetic dog with often be seen running side to side. 3. You may see a dog who is conflicted noted by an attempt to approach, only to pause and retreat backwards. 4. The socially confident dog may lie down to invite the other dog to them. This confident dog may also stand still with a neutral tail, closed mouth and an obvious forward stance showing she will play, but FYI....I have rules and if you body slam me, we will have words! These are the amazing dogs all puppies should have a chance to interact with before 10 months of age. 5. The fearful dog will most often avoid or try to pull away 6. The reactive dog becomes very emotional with lots of chaotic footwork which may include spinning often combined with lots of vocalization. I use a 7 Step Process to allow both dogs to choose to engage or walk away. Consider you may have two dogs who greet and walk together like friends, but they may not become playmates.
