Why Elden Ring Won't Include Difficulty Sliders (And Why That's OK)

From Software President Hidetaka Miyazaki has repeatedly said that his studio's famously challenging video games—including the forthcoming Elden Ring—will not feature difficulty sliders. However, in recent years, I've seen more and more gaming journalists voicing their complaints about the difficulty of Soulsborne games and calling for easy modes. This always strikes me as odd, because, like with any artistic medium, video games fall on an approachability spectrum. In this video essay, I discuss the semantical differences between approachability and accessibility and highlight some of the excellent work being done by various developers to make their games more enjoyable for people with impairments and disabilities. I also discuss the concept of artistic integrity and how, ultimately, Miyazaki has the right to express himself through game design in any way he chooses. Art is not a democracy. And if he says that difficulty sliders do not gel with his current artistic vision, I will respect that—just like I would respect their inclusion, should Miyazaki's vision ever change.
