Water Chestnuts, & the Mystic River Watershed Association Beth Meserve in Somerville, Massachusetts introduces the Ocean River Institute's Rob Moir to the Mystic River at the Blesssing of the Bay Boathouse in the shadow of Winthrop's house (city) on a hill. This is the spot where the first ship built by Europeans in Massachusetts, the Blessing of the Bay, launched in 1631. There's a three mile walking loop from Wellington Bridge (first bridge built in 1637). A five K running race is held here as well as paddling 12 miles roundtrip to the Mystic Lakes. Water chestnuts and Japanese knotweed are an invasive species. Several community events have been held to attack the spread of wicked invasive plants. Stop the choking of Mystic River. Help the herring return annually to the river. Black-crowned night herons stand sentinel along the Mystic during the herring run. The Tobin Bridge and the Amelia Earhart Dam mark the seaside of the Mystic. Above the dam salt marsh is replaced by freshwater marsh with still waters and pond lilies. These landmarks, wildlife and engaged community members are prominent in a mural painted along the Mystic River Parkway. This river gave its name to the 2001 Dennis Lehane novel and the 2003 Academy Award winning Clint Eastwood film Mystic River.
