Veteran Ex-Conrail GE Locomotive Moving Stone

VULX 2779, a former Conrail U23B still earns its keep at Vulcan Materials in Savage, Maryland. 2779 was built in November of 1974 as Lehigh Valley's 503. LV 503 started life working as a road engine in eastern PA hauling everything from coal to groceries. The U23Bs were a staple of American locomotives, being used for mainline service until their successors, the B23-7s came along. Still, although far and few between, U23Bs can still be seen working on shortlines or for industries. As of December 28, 2022, this locomotive has been taken out of service due to multiple cracks in the engine block. The engine’s block heater lost power as a result of a winter storm, and consequently froze the engine which caused it to crack. The engine is currently awaiting its disposition as of January 3, 2023.
