In the fourth episode pf Dying Stories of Purani Dilli, we visit the last Qalai Walas in Delhi. Qalai was a prominent aspect of any household in Delhi under the Mughal rule. Finding a copper utensil was pretty easy and one had to maintain the durability of those vessels by getting qalai done on them every 4-6 months. Failing to do so can make the food poisonous. People say, tamba enhances the taste of the food in comparison to other vessels. It even hold a lot of importance in Muslim weddings as well. While the bride is leaving her parent’s house a set of tamba vessels is given to her as ‘suhaaga’. In the lanes of Old Delhi though, you’ll find only 3-4 alai walas. People have drifted steadily towards other forms of vessels like aluminium for their daily usage as they feel it’s cheap. Maybe in the next coming years, you’ll not find qalai-walas anymore.
