The leopard’s broad diet, habitat adaptability, and smaller size relative to other big cats, allows it to thrive in a diverse range of territories throughout India. Human beings create some of the greatest threats to leopards’ survival. Leopards are often poached, skinned for ceremonial accouterment, hunted for trophies, and slayed when they encroach on livestock. Leopards have strong territorial instincts. They have been known to roam nearly 75 miles to return to their home turf. The Leopard’s scapula has evolved to support exceptionally strong neck and shoulder muscles that enable the cat to kill large prey easily and drag the prey up trees to shield it from other hungry predators. Roughly 11,000 leopards remain in India. Leopards’ global range has been reduced by 85% of what it was historically in Eurasia and by 66% of its historical range in Africa. The leopard’s name comes from the ancient Greek words pard for panther and the Latin leo for lion. What we now know as the cheetah was historically named leopard and was thought of as a cross between a lion (leo) and panther (pard). Steve Winter decided that he wanted to be a National Geographic photographer at the young age of eight. He had a photographer’s dark room by the age of 11.
