Chases Between CLT Panels: Benefits & Design Steps

When it comes to routing MEPF systems throughout a mass timber building, the options are plentiful but each comes with different impacts. Some do a better job of 'hiding' the MEPF systems while others express it. Some require extensive penetrations through the timber framing members while others do not require any penetrations. Head heights, construction speed and ease, pre-con coordination and fire and structural design impacts are all aspects that should be considered when deciding how MEPF systems will be integrated in a mass timber building. In this video, I share a conversation I recently had with Katie Ritenour of KPFF. Katie is a structural engineer and has worked on several mass timber projects which used an interesting MEPF integration option: chases between CLT floor panels. In a typical mass timber project, CLT floor panels are laid side by side, tight to each other. In this system, chases or gaps are left between the panels, leaving a space to run smaller MEPF elements between the panels, above the beams. This results in minimizing or eliminating penetrations in the beams while not affecting head height and keeping the systems less visible. But how do these chases affect the fire-resistance rating of the CLT floor assembly? Can the mass timber be considered the diaphragm with these gaps between panels? What about the acoustics performance of this system? Check out this video to learn the answers to these questions and more.
