Death of the UK Car Industry - Part 4: The Rover Group and MG-Rover

Hello, and welcome to the final act in the four-part tragedy that is the death of the British Car Industry, focusing on the politics, society, economics and decisions made over the course of a 70 year period that led from Britain being one of the largest car-making countries in the world to having no home-based indigenous car brands left. Part 4 brings us to the end of the road, as despite the promise of privatisation following the buyout of the Rover Group by British Aerospace in 1988, the much needed investment to ensure a refreshed model line-up and a competitive business strategy was sacrificed on the altar of cost-cutting, while when plentiful money flow did arrive in the form of a takeover by German giant BMW, a plethora of bad habits and slow progress in developing new cars led to a highly antagonistic standoff between Britain and Germany as BMW poured millions into the Rover Group with no results, leading inevitably to the unmanageable British car maker being stripped of its best assets and sold on as a shadow of its former self, with its final years simply being a series of going through the motions in the face of its ultimate demise.
