Its final episode aired on March 31, 1975. The show was filmed at the CBS Studio City backlot, a place that had once been owned by Republic Pictures, where stars like Gary Cooper had worked. A big part of the show's success was thanks to its cast, especially James Arness, who played Marshal Matt Dillon. Born on May 26, 1923, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, James had an interesting background. He served in World War II, where he was badly injured, which caused a limp he had for the rest of his life. Before the war, James had focused on family and education, but the war changed his life, leading him to pursue acting after he recovered. After the war, he first tried broadcasting, but soon moved to California to chase an acting career. He started getting roles and eventually met his first wife at a community playhouse. They had two children together, but their marriage ended tragically when his wife struggled with mental health issues and eventually took her own life. James’s career took a big turn when he met John Wayne, who helped him land a contract that eventually led to his famous role in "Gunsmoke."
