Why did Kaiser Wilhelm II have to abdicate? By late 1918, the German Empire was descending into chaos. World War I was clearly lost, and the German people were tired of fighting. Starvation afflicted thousands as national resources were directed toward the failing frontline, and the Empire's leaders appeared unconcerned by the suffering of the population. At the very least they (led and represented by the last Deutscher Kaiser, Wilhelm II) were much more concerned with continuing the pointless war.
