The Falcon 9 rocket is the workhorse rocket of the space industry today, launching like clockwork at a cadence we aren't used to seeing. But did you know there were many technical challenges to get it to this point? One of those that you may not be aware of is the concept of supercooling or super densifying liquid oxygen, which by the way, does NOT like to be densified! Eric Berger explains in his new book, 'Reentry', about how SpaceX brought in an unlikely candidate to solve the issue. Phillip Rench had spent time working on rollercoaster and orca tanks at Seaworld before joining SpaceX in 2014. Despite not having an aerospace background, his experience in creating an emergency whale lift at Seaworld, translated directly into working on SpaceX rockets. Valves that he knew inside and out that were used to lift the whales in the event of an emergency were also used on the launchpads in Cape Canaveral, Florida. Here is my super exclusive interview with Phillip Rench, one of the former SpaceX employees featured in Eric Berger's new book, 'Reentry', which is the sequel to Liftoff: The Desperate and Early Days of SpaceX. I flew all the way to Maine for this interview and I've never seen such a candid and personal piece with someone who worked for SpaceX. I was very appreciative of Phillip giving me his time and his honest answers. I hope this piece helps inspire those who want to work at SpaceX someday and also helps to uncover more of the behind the scenes challenges SpaceX faced and how they overcame those challenges.
