Getting students to sustain cogent lines of reasoning in their writing takes a good deal of yeoman's work ... and sometimes ... divine intervention :) Over the years, I have developed and honed my template of the syllogistic method - a template that my students use to write their body paragraphs across the expository modes. Here's the kicker - a ton of children's stories are written syllogistically and can be used to clearly delineate the concept of line of reasoning. In this writing workshop video, I use Jon Klassen's book "I Want My Hat Back" to illustrate how to sustain a clear line of reasoning in a rhetorical analysis of Kobe Bryant's letter to his 17-year-old-self. Per usual, I "Bob Ross" the instruction by "painting" a ton of exemplars and models.
