The Reims-Gueux circuit was established in 1926 as the second venue of the Grand Prix de la Marne, relocating the race from the square-shaped 22 km Circuit de Beine-Nauroy east of Reims to Reims-Gueux, west of Reims. It saw its national status validated in 1938, during the organization of the Grand Prix de France. The golden years started in 1950, with the arrival of Formula 1 to the Champagne lands and the Argentinian Juan Manuel Fangio wins the race at the wheel of an Alfa Romeo. Just like Spa-Francorchamps, Reims is a classic road course: fast, narrow and dangerous. Unbelievable today is the fact, that the organizers changed the layout of the track in order to make it even faster. For 1952, the track was reconfigured to bypass Gueux via the then-new D26 section, shortening the circuit from 7.8 km to 7.1 km. Improvements continued in preparations for 1953, the circuit was widened and resurfaced, and the pits were rebuilt. The circuit was used for Formula One races from 1950 to 1966, hosting the French Grand Prix 14 times, and was also used for sports car racing, including the 12 Hours of Reims. The circuit was closed in 1972 due to safety concerns, and the land was sold to a housing developer. Today, the only remnants of the circuit are the pit buildings and a few sections of the track that have been preserved.
