Road 970 connects Karigasniemi, Utsjoki and Nuorgam (Nuorgam is the northernmost village in the European Union). The road meanders at times low in the Teno River Valley, sometimes at a higher bank collision following the summer road of large flocks of wild salmon. The Teno River valley is about a kilometer wide and 200-300 meters deep, with a length of 148 km. The road is built according to the path following the riverside, without major bends. The current road is not in traffic until 1983. Until then, people lived here behind unknown roads. As a monument to the construction of the regional road, the so-called Mauno stone has been erected on the Pahtavaara observation deck, according to Mauno Koivisto, who opened the road. Instead of cutting silk ribbons, the president inaugurated the road by sawing across the Tenon Boat.
