THE ELCHO GOBLIN PLAYS THE CUCKOO WALTZ My Elcho Goblin is a 20-note keyless street organ made by M. J. Savins, possibly about 40 years ago. I have fitted it with a new façade using 19th, and possibly 18th century oak carvings that were rescued by my grandfather over 130 years ago, when many churches were undergoing restorations which involved discarding worthy bits of craftmanship. He used them to construct various fireplaces in his house, which was requisitioned during both World Wars. The carvings on the side of the Goblin were both constructed from two vertical bits of oak neatly glued together, but as can be seen all four faces are missing. My mother always maintained that they had been removed as keepsakes by the US soldiers that were billeted there during WW 2. I like to think that there is a possibility that some of the faces might still survive somewhere in the USA! The top and bottom carved oak panels with mythical birds and bunches of grapes are a triumph of craftsmanship. If anyone has any information or theories about these carvings, I would be interested to hear from them. The Cuckoo Waltz was composed over a century ago by the Swedish composer J. E. Jonasson.
