The 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 stands out as one of the most intriguing new EVs available today thanks to its eye-catching retro-futuristic styling and ultra-quick charging capabilities. Pricing starts at a reasonable $42,985 for the entry-level SE trim with a single motor and rear-wheel drive. From there, the Ioniq 5 lineup includes several configurations ranging up to the tested all-wheel drive Limited model with a $57,245 sticker. No matter which version you choose, the Ioniq 5 provides a smooth and quiet driving experience with responsive acceleration. The tested AWD model hits 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds thanks to a combined 320 horsepower and 446 lb-ft of torque from its dual electric motors. Handling feels sporty and controlled thanks to the low center of gravity afforded by the underfloor battery pack. The ride quality remains comfortable over most road surfaces. Steering could provide more feedback but the Ioniq 5 feels nimble overall. One of the most impressive elements is the 800-volt electrical architecture that enables ultra-fast charging. Using a 350 kW DC fast charger, Hyundai claims the Ioniq 5 can replenish its battery from 10 to 80% in just 18 minutes. Our testing showed it was possible to add roughly 60 miles of range in about 5 minutes. That charging speed rivals more expensive EVs like the Porsche Taycan. EPA-rated range lands at an impressive 303 miles in the rear-wheel drive version, or 266 miles for the AWD model. Real-world highway range is a bit lower but still competitive, with our test car traveling 210 miles at 75 mph. Regenerative braking can be customized via paddle shifters on the steering wheel. The interior provides a high-tech atmosphere with two 12-inch displays for the instrument cluster and infotainment system. An augmented reality head-up display is available as well. Laid out like a lounge, the Ioniq 5 interior maximizes space with a flat floor and seats that recline and slide. Wireless smartphone charging is a glaring omission but there are ample USB ports. Front and rear passenger room is expansive, benefitting from the crossover’s long 118-inch wheelbase. Cargo space measures 28 cubic feet behind the rear seats, expanding to 59 cubic feet with them folded. That’s significantly more than what compact SUV rivals such as the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Volkswagen ID.4 offer. The frunk is on the small side, however. Material quality impresses with sustainable and recycled finishes. Standard driver assistance features include forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane keeping assist and departure warning. Upgrades like highway driving assist, remote smart parking and a surround view parking camera boost safety further. The Ioniq 5 earned high marks in crash testing as well. Hyundai covers the Ioniq 5 with a generous warranty that includes 5 years/60,000 miles bumper to bumper and 10 years/100,000 miles for the battery and powertrain. Scheduled maintenance is included for the first 3 years or 36,000 miles too. That outstanding coverage removes any long-term ownership worries.
