Junior Sebastian Barth qualified for the quarterfinals in the 110 meter hurdles at the 2014 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary round today, marking the second year in a row he has accomplished the feat. The Gauting, Germany, native ran a time of 14.02 in his heat to place third and automatically qualify him for the quarterfinals. The quarterfinal race will take place tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. Twelve athletes out of tomorrow's quarterfinal will advance to Eugene, Ore. for the NCAA Championships. Ryan Newtoff bested his first round time in the 400 meter hurdles today in the quarterfinal competition, placing sixth in his heat with a time of 51.01. The senior ended his season at UNI running the second fastest time of his career and will sit in the UNI track and field record books as third all-time in the event. Rounding out the Panther competitors during day two of the NCAA West Preliminary round was freshman Brandon Carnes in the 200 meters. Carnes turned in a solid time of 21.37 in the first round competition to end his first season at UNI. The true freshman ended his memorable season with four MVC titles and his first NCAA West Preliminary round appearance. UNI will return to action tomorrow with senior Matt Schiffer competing in the men's discus competition at 3 p.m. Barth will finish up the Panthers weekend in Fayetteville, Arkansas, with the 110 meter hurdles quarterfinal at 7:05 p.m.
