#lichens #12biologyclass #bscbotany #11biology #biology For pdf notes and Book visit https://www.biologylectures.com/  Lichen may be defined as a permanent association of small group of plants of two dissimilar organisms, an alga and a fungus living together in a close symbiotic relationship.  They form a separate stable thallus of specific structure.  The algal component is known as phycobiont or photobiont.  The fungal component is known as mycobiont.  The algal components of lichens belong to Chlorophyceae (Chlorella, Treabuxia, Protococcus) or Cyanophyceae (Nostoc, Chlorococcus, Scytonema) or Myxophyceae,  Whereas the fungal components belong to Ascomycetes (Ascolichens) or Basidiomycetes (Basidiolichens).
