Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the biggest unmet clinical need of our time, not least because an understanding of the basic mechanism driving the underlying process of neurodegeneration is still not established. This talk will focus on a little known peptide (T14), that is doubled in the Alzheimer brain. We shall see how detection of T14 could offer the opportunity for a pre-symptomatic screen whilst blockade with a cyclated variant (NBP14), already been accredited by the MHRA as a truly innovative, could lead to a different type of therapeutic strategy. NBP14 displaces the toxic T14 from its receptor and, when given chronically to Alzheimer model mice (5XFAD), enables the same level of cognitive performance as wild type counterparts. Hence a combination of a T14 presymptomatic biomarker coupled with NBP14 as a successful means of halting cell loss, offers the eventual prospect of an effective treatment for AD.
