Mountie Mick's Deathride Longplay (C64) [50 FPS]

Developed by Reaktör Software and published by Ariolasoft in 1987. Mick's job is navigate from one end of the train to the other, dispatching gang members and avoiding obstacles along the way. Once Mick reaches the front engine, he must escape to the next train by using a handcar. The game is set across nine trains, each having more cars to navigate than the last. The player must guide Mick along the carriage roofs, climbing over crates and killing gang members with his revolver. Bullets are limited, but crates of ammunition can be collected to replenish supplies. Mick can also plant bombs, but these have limited use and are best left alone. To complicate matters, some of the carriages contain poisonous gas and have sprung a leak. Mick must collect a gas mask in order to pass these cars, else a life will be lost. As might be expected, trains can enter tunnels, plunging Mick into total darkness. Torches can be collected and should be used to illuminate the darkness, but should be used sparingly as the power runs out fairly quickly. Gang members will try to kill Mick with guns, grenades and also by trying to decouple carriages from the train. If a gang member enters a stooping position over a carriage, they must be killed quickly to prevent the carriage from coming loose. I was quite impressed by this game. It was simple, yet fun to play and with nine trains, there's plenty to do. It's worth noting that the game loops after the ninth train is completed, so there is no ending sequence, which is a shame. The graphics are simple, but nicely drawn and the music, by Ben Daglish, is good as well. According to some sources, the original game had a bug that prevented progress past level seven, due to a problem with a train car that couldn't be passed. The version I used to record the video purports to have fixed this issue, and I certainly experienced no problems with the game. Mountie Mick is a decent little game with plenty of fun to be had. #retrogaming
