Cafe Daughter, directed by Shelley Niro, will make its European premiere at the Matera International Film Festival on Thursday, November 7th. Last August, the film received the Air Canada-Matera Prize at the 34th International First Peoples' Festival. Shelley Niro was born in Niagara Falls, NY, and currently lives in Brantford, Ontario. She is a member of the Six Nations Reserve, Bay of Quinte Mohawk, Turtle Clan. Niro is a multi-media artist, whose work spans photography, painting, beadwork, and film. She is conscious of the impact that post-colonial media have had on Indigenous people. Like many artists from various Indigenous communities, she works tirelessly to present people in realistic and explorative portrayals. Some of her photo series include Mohawks in Beehives, This Land is Mime Land, and M: Stories of Women. Her films include Honey Moccasin, It Starts With a Whisper, The Shirt, Kissed by Lightning, and Robert’s Paintings. Shelley graduated with honors from the Ontario College of Art and received her Master of Fine Arts from the University of Western Ontario. Niro was the inaugural recipient of the Aboriginal Arts Award, presented by the Ontario Arts Council in 2012. In 2017, she received the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts from the Canada Council, the Scotiabank Photography Award, and the REVEAL Award from the Hnatyshyn Foundation. She was also honored with the Arts and Culture Award from the Dreamcatcher Charitable Foundation. Niro continues to produce work that reflects herself and her community.
