Today was one of Vintage Trains’ express steam excursions ‘The Cathedral’s Express’ With GWR castle class 5043 ‘Earl Of Mount Edgcumbe’ at the helm, retracing a former stomping ground of her days in active BR service, she was based at cardiff canton for a good period of her working life so it was only fitting she’d work this tour down the welsh marches… the headboard finished it off beautifully! As the conditions for today were bone dry a fire risk was a risk here, meaning the 47 on the rear was on hand to give a slight help if needed…. It was clear in my shots at All Stretton & Abergavenny. Starting from Dorridge the journey would take passengers to through Birmingham and down the Wolverhampton- Shrewsbury route giving customers the opportunity to visit the historic town of Hereford and visit the cathedral for mappa mundi or the beautiful Cardiff city exploring the events and attractions going on in the capital of wales. Taking the same route on the return also. It was an early start for me this morning leaving the house at 06:00am and getting on the 07:41 tfw to shrewsbury from wolves… managing to get to church stretton on time it was the 2 mile slog up the A49 on foot might I add… not for the feint hearted that’s for sure. After catching up with the lads at Abergavenny it was a rush to Birmingham to get the castle arrive and depart into New Street and then we’d race over for tyseley to see her one final time… unfortunately the signallers done it again and let her go early.. meaning this wasn’t ment to be.
