Dominate and Recessive Genes Individuals receive one version of a gene, called an allele, from each parent. If the alleles are different, the dominant allele will be expressed, while the effect of the other allele, called recessive, is masked. Dominate Genes: Will be expressed and can masking or overriding the effect of a different variant of the same gene on the other copy of the chromosome. Recessive Genes: An individual must inherit two copies of the mutated allele in order for the trait to be expressed.. This does not mean these genes are “bad” or “negative” True Breeding A true breeding is a kind of breeding where the parents would produce offspring that would carry the same phenotype. This means that the parents are homozygous for every trait.
