Livy: the Most Important Roman Historian? (Rome and Romans)

Livy's Ab Urbe Condita is one of the most important sources for Rome prior to the Sack by the Gauls in 390 BCE. Most of what we would use to establish the history of Rome prior to this point was either destroyed, looted, or simply forgotten about after this event. Livy's works are some of the few that we actually have relatively intact. And yet, the history described within Ab Urbe Condita is sometimes fairly fantastical. With references to godly action on behalf of Rome, Roman legions overcoming terrible odds, and figures such as Cincinnatus coming to Rome's aid in it's darkest times, it all seems slightly overblown. Livy himself is a subpar historian at best and a terrible historian at his worst. This begs the question, why do we continue to use Ab Urbe Condita for modern historical work? Why is the text not just completely disregarded? How did Livy write it? Who did he rely on? And, why do I still say it is one of the most important works on Roman history ever? Let's talk about it.
