Evidence of its existence is captured in rare photographs and vintage postcards of the city, two of which are presented here. This theme of lost bodies of water resonates universally, as cities around the world confront the memories of lakes, rivers, and other natural landscapes that have vanished due to urbanization, climate change, and human intervention. The vanished lake serves as a poignant metaphor for loss and memory, symbolizing not only the physical absence of nature but also the emotional void left in its wake. It invites reflection on how we relate to the environments we inhabit and the histories we often overlook. By connecting this local narrative to a broader context, Lakes Underneath emphasizes our shared human experience of yearning for what has been lost and the desire to preserve fleeting beauty. This theme is further developed through selected phrases from R. Tagore's work The Gardener (12), a poem that evokes a mysterious lake imbued with both allure and melancholy. Tagore's exploration of longing, connection, and the ephemeral nature of existence aligns with the notion of the disappeared lake, encouraging listeners to ponder the deeper meanings behind what remains unseen. The chosen phrases are meditated upon and transformed into six sections of the piece: I. The water will cling round your feet and babble its secret II. I know well the rhythm of your steps; they are beating in my heart III. If you would leave off your play and dive into the water IV. Your thoughts will stray from your dark eyes, like birds V. My lake is cool and fathomlessly deep. It is dark like a dreamless sleep. VI. Come, O come to my lake (Coda) Rather than a gradual development of musical material, this piece is constructed on repeated motifs and strong contrasts in various musical parameters. By intertwining the beauty of Tagore's language with the notion of lost lakes, Lakes Underneath invites listeners to engage in a contemplative journey through memory, nature, and the passage of time, prompting us to consider the landscapes that shape our identities and the invisible threads that connect us to the past.
