建長寺は、神奈川県鎌倉市にある臨済宗建長寺派の大本山。鎌倉で最も高い格式を持つ鎌倉五山の第一位の名刹です。建長寺は、建長5年（1253年）に鎌倉幕府第5代執権の北条時頼が創建した我が国最初の禅寺でもあります。 建長寺が所在する場所は、鎌倉の北の出入口に当たる要衝の地で北条氏の本拠地でもありました。建長寺が隆盛を極めた頃は、僧侶約千人、400以上の末寺と塔頭49院を抱えていたと伝わります。建長寺は度重なる地震の被害を受けながらも、鎌倉幕府の庇護により復興を果たしてきましたが、北条氏の滅亡とともに、その勢いは衰えていくのでした。 江戸時代には、幕府からの庇護を受けるなど、五山第一の寺格に相応しい復興を果たしていきます。現在の建長寺は、江戸時代以降に再建または移築された建物が多く残り、近年、大庫裏や僧堂大徹堂なども再興を果たして、その姿を今に伝えています。庭園は、「建長寺庭園」として国の名勝に指定されており、境内全体が国の史跡に指定されています。 京都や奈良とは趣が異なる鎌倉の寺院は、静寂の中で訪れる人を包む込むような安らぎを感じさせます。その安らぎを求めて、ここ建長寺には毎年多くの参拝者が訪れているのです。 臨済宗建長寺派大本山／鎌倉五山／国宝／国の名勝／国の史跡／神奈川県鎌倉市 ____________________________________________________ Kenchoji Temple is the head temple of the Rinsai sect Kenchoji Temple in Kamakura City, Kanagawa Prefecture. It is the most prestigious and the first rank of Kamakura Gozan (Five) temples in Kamakura. Kenchoji temple was the first zen temple in Japan, founded in 1253 by Hojo Tokiyori, the fifth regent of the Kamakura shogunate. Kenchoji temple was located at a strategic point at the northern entrance to Kamakura, which was also the headquarters of the Hojo clan. It is said that when Kenchoji temple was at its peak, it had about 1,000 monks, more than 400 branch temples, and 49 temples. Despite repeated damage from earthquakes, Kenchoji Temple was able to recover under the patronage of the Kamakura Shogunate, but with the fall of the Hojo clan, its momentum waned. In the Edo period (1603-1867), the temple received protection from the shogunate and achieved a recovery befitting its status as the first temple in the Gozan. Many of the buildings that were rebuilt or moved to the present Kenchoji temple after the Edo period still remain, and in recent years, the back of the Kuri and the monastery Daitetsu-do have also been revived, and their appearance is being conveyed to the present. The garden is designated as "Kenchoji Garden" and the entire temple grounds are designated as a national historic site. Different from Kyoto and Nara, Kamakura's temples offer a sense of peace and tranquility that envelops visitors in its serenity. Many worshipers visit Kenchoji Temple every year in search of that peace of mind.
