#TheRocketCityRailfan #andrewrailabammers #Erie #Virginian #Baldwin @AndrewTheRocketCityRailfan401 #Triplex #History #engineering For those who don't know, articulated steam locomotives are steam locomotives that use two or more independent engine units, usually 2, that can bend around curves using hinge pins connecting them to the locomotive. 4 major types of articulated exist, those being Meyers, Garratts, Fairlies, and Mallets. The latter is the most common in North America, particularly America and Mexico. Mallet types usually, have two engine units under the boiler. The rear is fixed the boiler and firebox while the front is held in place with a hinge pin connecting it to the rear engine unit or frame. When traversing curves, the two engines bend around it, with the back engine along with the boiler following the front engine which is swinging out from under the boiler. But what would happen if you expanded the concept to 3 sets of driving wheels, with the 3rd under the tender? Well, this is what actually happened over 100 years ago, courtesy of Baldwin Engineer George R Henderson. The result, an absurd locomotive that couldn't produce enough steam just like the ATSF 3000s, with the added issues of violent wheelslip and having 1/3-2/3 the max speed of the 3000's 15mph/24kmph.
