Example 2 - Solving for Step Response of an RC Circuit

This video shows how to solve for the Step response of a first order RC circuit. It has the following chapters: (00:00) [1] Introduction (01:46) [2] Identify step response (04:19) [3] Solve for step response parameters (12:54) [4] Mathematica (14:12) [5] PSPICE (15:16) [6] Solve for other voltages/currents It discusses: (a) In Section 2: How to distinguish between natural and step response. (b) In Section 3: How to solve for the three parameters that make up the step response. (c) In Section 4: How to use Mathematica to plot the step response. (d) In Section 5: How to use use PSPICE to verify the solution to the step response. (e) In Section 6: How to solve for other voltages/currents in the circuit using the step response. Update: 4/12/2023 --------------------------------- The general steps are below: Step 1: Examine the circuit after switching takes place: a. If there is an independent source in the circuit, it is a step response problem. b. If there is NO independent source in the circuit, it is a natural response problem. Step 2a: Find v_c(0-) using the equivalent circuit at t=0-. Step 2b: Find tau using the circuit after switching has occurred. Step 2c: Find v_c(infinity) using the equivalent circuit at t=infinity. Step 2d: Substitute to get the expression for the voltage across the capacitor. Step 3: Solve for other desired voltages and currents using the expression for the voltage across the capacitor.
