Virgil, The Aeneid as Secondary Epic

Virgil’s extraordinary epic takes us back to the Trojan War, but unlike the great Homer who had profiled the Greeks, he narrates what happened to the defeated Trojans. To that end, he speaks of the heroism of pious Aeneas. This tale is once again recounted in the encyclopedic epic form, reflecting the high seriousness of the subject matter. By various means of allusion, from the poem’s structure to its conventions to its exalted diction, Virgil acknowledges Homer as his master. Yet his epic claims superiority insofar as his subject is the glory of Rome, a present (and he suggests future) reality and not just a past event. But in the background of the epic proclaimed with all the might of the Roman Empire, a quiet and yet more powerful epic is beginning lived out in Bethlehem, a backwater of Rome.
