Franz Josef & Fox Glacier | South Island, New Zealand Vlog 5/5

In this final South Island road trip vlog, we made our way from Wanaka over to Glacier Country in hopes of seeing Franz Josef Glacier and Fox Glacier. The drive there was super awesome as it was raining so gushing waterfalls were in full force all along our route. Our Airbnb was a private room in Takoha and Simon's home located in Franz Josef Glacier. It's a very short drive to Franz Josef Glacier from their accommodation as well as restaurants, a convenience store and some other local attractions. It's also only a 30 min drive to Fox Glacier too placing it in a great location. Warm, friendly hosts and shared spaces to enjoy with other guests in their lovely home too. Takoha & Simon's Airbnb https://www.airbnb.co.nz/rooms/17424866 Franz Josef Glacier and Fox Glacier are two of the most accessible glaciers around but sadly because of climate change and global warming, they have retreated significantly over the years making it much more difficult to see these incredible natural wonders. There are still a few ways to see Franz Josef and Fox Glacier though. From Heli-hikes that take you on scenic flights to the glaciers and land on them so you can actually walk on them, to ice-climbs even. These activities are pretty pricey (although special once-in-a-lifetime kind of awesomeness we're sure) but if you don't have the funds to splash out, there are a few free options to see the glaciers too, which is what we did. Beware the weather can be quite temperamental so it can be sunny then raining the very next moment! It happened to us a few times but thankfully we were able to visit both Franz Josef Glacier and Fox Glacier too over the 3 days we stayed there. A fantastic spot to see Fox Glacier from a distance that we highly recommend (and was recommended to us) is Peak Viewpoint near Gillespies Beach Rd (a turn from Cook Flat Rd). We had a brilliantly clear day to admire Fox Glacier from afar. We also did a short walk at Lake Matheson called Jetty Lookout before we went to do the Fox Glacier Valley Walk. On a very still day you can get a brilliant reflection of Mt Cook and Mt Tasman on the glacial lake but unfortunately we didn't have that during the time we visited! The Fox Glacier Valley walk was a much quicker hike than expected but we preferred the "peak viewpoint" overall. We hope you've enjoyed our 5 part South Island, New Zealand road trip vlogs and got some ideas for things to see and do in the South Island of NZ.
