Jumped at West Hills in Santee. I was trying to get on a 14' 185 gripping 14' and struggled to get the pole to vertical at first. Once I lowered my grip to 13' 8" the penetration was much better. Also, Im finding when I focus on top hand pressure and driving forwards, not upwards, that I penetrate better. The second to last jump I was focused on this and it was a blow through. If I can hit the top hand pressure and drive forwards, not upwards, at takeoff hopefully I can grip up to 14' and still get the pole to vertical. Also, I need to get more inverted and shoot sideways through an imaginary hula hoop at the top of the pole like Shawn Francis talks about. If I can do this I have a better chance to catch the pole and hopefully jump higher. Finally, when I try to shoot sideways through the hula hoop I often drop my legs. The harder I try the harder my legs drop. The more my legs drop, the more I flag off the pole which is bad in at least 3 ways: I tend to hip the bar knocking it off on the way up. Also, since I am flagged off it requires more energy from the pole to throw me higher. Finally, flagging off directs the energy more sideways and less upwards. Ultimately it prevents me from jumping higher. Im going to focus on being more passive and just staying tight to the pole and letting the pole throw me.
