The Bleeding Heart Plant is Lamprocapnos spectabilis, formerly Dicentra spectabilis. The heart shaped flowers are pink, red or white depending on variety and these plants grow well in a shaded position in a humus rich well drained soil. Originally from Japan, Korea, Siberia and China, this is a monotypic species. Dicentra are commonly called the Pacific Bleeding Heart and are found in East Asia and North America. These are a perennial plant so they come back every year, they spread slowly by underground rhizomes as well as by seed. The common name comes from the heart shaped flowers that appear in spring to summer depending on climate zone. White, Pink and Red flowering types are available all with the distinctive heart shaped flowers. Flowering in spring the flowers are very attractive and the ferny foliage that follows lasts well into summer.
