Disaster risk reduction (DRR) is imperative for small island developing States (SIDS). SIDS have high levels of vulnerability and exposure to hazards of all kinds, including those augmented by climate change. On average, SIDS lose 2.1 % of their GDP annually due to disasters, whereas other countries face an average of 0.3 % of GDP. Factors such as their small size, remoteness, spatial isolation, and dependence on trade can exacerbate the impacts of shocks and stressors on SIDS, with cascading impacts across systems and sectors.
